Stuffed Aloo Idli Recipe

Idli is no doubt a healthy recipe. There is little to no oil in this recipe. Not only that, it is made with protein-rich lentils. So idli tops the health department.

We have been eating idli for long enough. So it’s only natural that we are bore of the same old plain idli recipe, that has very little taste.

For the sake of variety and a change from the regular idli, people come up with different variations to make this recipe. Stuffed idli is one such recipe.

These flavorsome idlis are fuss-free and just as easy to make. And your kids are sure to fall for it, no matter how much they don’t like idli.

You can prepare this dish with whatever stuffing you want to have and as healthy as you like. This can be compared to an idli sandwich too.

We have stuffed it with spicy potatoes with the tanginess of amchur powder. You can add lots of green if you like.

Ingredients of Stuffed Idli

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • White Urad Dal - 1 cup (Split)
  • Hot Water - as needed
  • Edible Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 pcs small size (Chopped)
  • Green Chili - 1 pcs (Chopped)
  • Ginger-Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Amchur Powder - 1 tsp
  • Green Garlic - 1 tbsp (Chopped)
  • Coriander - 1 tbsp (Chopped)
  • Potato - 2 pcs (boiled & grated)
  • Baking Soda - 1 tsp
  • Water - 1 tsp

Steps for Stuffed Idli

  • Making the batter
  • Take rice and spit white urad dal in separate bowls.Add hot water and allow rice and urad dal to soak till soft.
  • Now grind soaked rice and urad dal till it becomes a thick paste.
  • Take a bowl and mix rice and urad dal paste. Cover it allow it to rest for at least 15-20 minutes. Do not open the lid once close.
  • Making Stuffing
  • Take a pan. Add oil and heat it.Add chopped onion. Cook it till brown.Add chopped green chili, ginger-garlic paste, salt, turmeric, amchur powder, chopped green garlic, and chopped coriander. Mix everything well and cook it on low flame.
  • Add boiled and grated potato and mix it properly. Put off the flame, allow the green masala potato mixture to cool down.
  • Rub oil on your palms. Now roll dumplings of the potato mixture, then flattened it a bit. Do not make it too big.
  • Take idli stand, grease it with cooking oil and keep it aside.
  • Now take the batter and add baking soda. Pour the little water and mix it well. Your batter is ready.
  • Take the greased idli stand. Pour some batter once as the first layer.Now place the flattened dumplings on it.Now pour the final layer of the batter on top and cover the stuffing properly.
  • Repeat the above steps for each idli batch. Steam the idlis for 10 to 15 minutes. After that keep it aside and allow it to cool down. Do not take out idli while it is still hot or it will tarnish.
  • Take it out carefully after it cools down. Serve with coconut chutney, tomato sauce, or fry it in mustard seeds with green chili.
