Kathiawadi Dhokli Shaak Recipe

Kathiawadi Dhokli Shaak is a famous Kathiawadi/Gujarati dish made with gram flour, buttermilk, veggies, and many at-home ingredients. The gravy made with yogurt doubles the taste. Moreover, everyone loves it in the family.

However, the preparation of Kathiawadi Dhokli Shaak is straightforward, and one can prepare this tasty shaak quickly. A regular day recipe made by Gujarati/Kathiyawadi people.

I belong to the Kathiyawad region of Gujarat, and thus it is one of my favourite lunches recipe. The recipe is the same as made by my Mom. It is fantastic, just like my Mom. My mom learned this recipe from one of neighbour.

Ingredients of Kathiawadi Dhokli Shaak

  • For Gram Flour Cakes
  • Gram Flour - 3 Cups
  • Buttermilk - 500 ml
  • Green Chili Paste - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Spring Onion - 1/2 Cup (Chopped) (Green and White)
  • Cumin Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - To Taste
  • Edible Oil - 1 tsp
  • For Gravy
  • Onion - 1 Pc (Finely Chopped)
  • Yogurt - 2 tbsp
  • Green Chili Paste - 1/2 tbsp
  • Ginger-Garlic Paste - 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Dry Chilis - 2 Pcs
  • Coriander Powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Salt - To Taste

Steps for Kathiawadi Dhokli Shaak

  • Take a pan and boil the buttermilk in it. Add green chili paste, turmeric, coriander powder, spring onion, cumin powder, salt and oil in it. Let it boil for 5-7 minutes.
  • Sieve the gram flour. Put the flour in the boiling buttermilk. Wait for 5 minutes. Use a rolling pin for stirring the mixture. Stir in the clockwise direction till it turns into dough. Lover the flame and leave it covered for 5 minutes.
  • Then Shift the dough to a pre-greased tray. Apply oil on hands and level it. The thickness should be 1-1.5 cms max. With the help of a knife cut them into square pieces any other desired shape.
  • Heat oil in a pan and put whole red dry chilis in it. After 30 seconds add the chopped onion it and saute for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder yogurt and salt in it. Mix it well and cook until oil floats. add the gram flour cakes prepared earlier cook for another 5-7 minutes.
  • Your Tasty Kathiawadi Dholki Shaak is ready to serve. Garnish it with fresh coriander leaves if you like.
