Arbi / Chamadumpa Pulusu (Taro Root) Masala Curry

Arbi masala curry is a delicious and mouth-watering curry we prepare from taro root. The name arbi is actually the Hindi for taro or colocasia.

One can make this with various ingredients like peanut powder, cumin seeds, curd, asafoetida, curry leaves, ginger paste, garlic paste, onion paste, red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric, and garam masala. A perfect spicy taste to suit your tastebuds.

In North India, people usually eat this curry with roti made from buckwheat flour or millet like rice. The rice is a special food item for fasting. Usually, people consume this arbi masala curry during fast on Navratri occasion. However, you can have it on any other normal day also if you are not fasting.

Arbi or Arvi is one of the oldest cultivated plants. The roots of this plant are highly rich in starch content besides containing calcium and iron. It also has many healing properties that are useful to get rid of many diseases.

If you do not have taro available then you can prepare the same recipe with potatoes too. It will taste good too and won’t have much of a difference.

It is actually a Satwik recipe. Since people prepare this curry mostly during fast, they don’t use either garlic or onion. But here we have used both to make the curry even more tasty and flavourful.

This recipe can be either dry or have gravy. It tastes better with almost all Indian bread like Roti, Paratha, etc. and also tastes great with poori.
