Chana Dal Barfi is an extremely tasty sweet delicacy in India. The dessert mainly consists of roasted chana dal, sugar, and milk.

The amount of ghee in this sweet dish is less. But you can adjust the measurement as per your taste.

It is essential to roast the chana dal properly. This gives the recipe a nice flavor and aroma when cooked.  It also eliminates the rawness of chana dal which may not taste good when consumed.

Usually, classic barfi is made plainly with milk, ghee, and sugar. However, you can always find different varieties of barfi. Sweet potato or mango barfi are a few to name.

Chana dal barfi is one of the versions of it. Even if chana dal is usually prepared with spices, you are not going to regret trying a sweet dish out of it.

This barfi is a great option to have while you need to satisfy your sweet tooth or sweet cravings. The minimal amount of sugar and ghee in it will make you enjoy the dish without the guilt.

Ingredients of Chana Dal Barfi

  • Split Chickpeas - 250 gm
  • Water - 2-3 glasses (to soak)
  • Ghee - 100 gm (as needed)
  • Milk - 2 glasses
  • Saffron Milk - 3-4 tbsp
  • Cardamom - 1 tbsp
  • Sugar - 200 gm
  • Khoya - 120 gm
  • Cashew - 10-15 pcs
  • Almond - 10-15 pcs
  • Ghee - 70 gm (as needed)
  • Ghee - 2-3 tbsp (for greasing)
  • To Garnish
  • Cashew - 10-15 pcs (whole)
  • Pistachio - 30 gm
  • Rose Petals - 10-12 pcs

Steps for Chana Dal Barfi

  • Preparation
  • Take a bowl, add water and soak the split chickpeas in it for 5-6 hours.
  • Take a pan and heat it. Roast the chickpeas until it is dry.
  • Grind the roasted chickpeas in a mixer jar and keep aside.
  • Add ghee in a heated pan. Add the chickpeas flour. Saute until it changes colour and aroma.
  • Now add milk in the pan and cook till the mixture attends a semi-solid texture. Keep stirring the mixture.
  • Drop saffron milk and stir again.
  • Add cardamom powder and mix it. Then add sugar and cook until the sugar dissolves completely in the mixture. Keep stirring the mixture. See that it doesn't burn at the bottom.
  • Now add Khoya and mix well.
  • Add cashew and almond and mix it once again.
  • Finally, add ghee and mix it one final time. Cook it for 1-2 minutes.
  • Take a vessel and grease it with ghee.
  • Pour the mixture in it bit by bit. Even it out when done.
  • Brush the top once again with ghee.
  • Garnish it with cashew, pistachio and rose petals. Chill it until it solidifies.
  • Chana Dal Barfi is ready. Cut in equal pieces and serve.
