Arabic Mutton Hareesa Recipe

Arabic Mutton Harees or Arabic Mutton Hareesa is a healthy and super delicious Arabic one-pot recipe. It is one of the traditional recipes of the Arabian Peninsula.

Each country has a different variant of this harees. Omanis like it with chicken, dry fruits, and barista. Whereas Emiratis and Qataris like it raw with meat and olive oil.

Mutton Harees is a Ramadan special dish usually made with meat and boiled barley. You can also use a combination of wheat and barley.

Arabs make it in vast quantities and distribute to neighbors and give out to needy and poor every evening before the breaking of the fast during the month of Ramazan.

Arabs are known for their hospitality in the world and also for their charity. During Ramazan, Arabs have a tradition of sending dates, mandi, or harees to their neighbors.

Ingredients of Arabic Mutton Harees

  • Mutton - 1/2 Kg (Boneless)
  • Barley - 1/2 Kg (Jowar)
  • Ginger-Garlic Paste - 1 tbsp
  • Green Chili Paste - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin Seed - 1/2 tbsp (Crushed)
  • Fennel Seed - 1 tbsp (Crushed)
  • Salt - To Taste
  • Chat Masala - 1 tbsp
  • Lemon Juice - 2 tbsp
  • Edible Oil - For Tempering (Baghar)
  • Coriander Leaves - 1 tbsp
  • Mint Leaves - 1 tbsp

Steps for Arabic Mutton Harees

  • Soak barley overnight in a bowl. Take a pot and add soaked barley, water, salt & cooking oil. Boil till soft.
  • Now grind fennel seeds, cumin seeds & star anise together. Keep aside.
  • Boil mutton cubes in a poot with ginger garlic paste, masala powder & salt. Boil till soft.
  • Once boiled separate stock & mutton cubes. Keep it aside.
  • Now blend the boiled barley to make a thick paste.
  • Add mutton cubes & mutton stock to the barley thick paste. Mix well & cook for 10 minutes.
  • Add mint leaves, coriander leaves, cumin powder & hot cooking oil. Mix well & cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Your Arabic Mutton Harees is ready. Garnish with ground masala, coriander & mint leaves. Serve hot.
