Chickpea Curry – Kadala Curry Recipe

Kerela Style Chickpea Curry or Kadala Curry is a delicious and mouth-watering recipe. Usually served with rice or Idly but you can enjoy this with hot chapati, idly or dosa.

The taste feels like moderate pepper spicy with fresh coconut aroma and it has semi-gravy with the excess of chana chunks.

We can prepare this with lots of methods by tuning the ingredients. My best friend is the inspiration for me to make this recipe. She is from Kerela. When I used to visit there, she made Kadala Curry for me. I love this delicacy like anything.

I miss her taste so decided to make it at home. This is very healthy in nature and especially chickpeas are high in protein. My husband prefers eating protein foods because he goes to the gym. And as told by my husband, this recipe is really a tummy-filling recipe for lunch.

Here I am using spices directly but if you want thick consistency you can use the smashed onion, tomatoes along other spices.

Ingredients of Chickpea Curry

  • Black Chana Dal - 1/2 cup (boiled)
  • Onion - 1 (medium-size) (chopped)
  • Tomato - 1 (medium-size) (finely chopped)
  • Garlic - 2-3 pieces (smashed) (optional)
  • Ginger - a small piece (smashed)
  • Cinnamon - 1-2
  • Green Chili - 1 (sliced)
  • Clove - 1-2 piece
  • Fennel Seeds - 1/4 tbsp
  • Red Chili Powder - 1/4 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder - a pinch
  • Coriander Powder - 1/4 tbsp
  • Coconut Milk - 1/2 cup (or shredded coconut-1/2 cup)
  • Coconut oil - 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tbsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves
  • Coconut - 1 tbsp (Fried)

Steps for Chickpea Curry

  • Wash and Soak the black chana dal 4-5 hours before to start cook then boil and keep aside.
  • Heat oil with a medium flame once hot add mustard seeds and allow it split then add curry leaves.
  • Add fennel seeds, cloves, cinnamon, sliced green Chili one by one then add onion and fry until it turns transparent.
  • Add tomato and continue to fry until it gets musky.
  • Once it did add red Chili, coriander powder and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Add boiled chana dal and required salt & water furthermore fry 5-7 minutes.
  • Add coconut milk and continue to cook with a low flame about 3-5 minutes.
  • Finally, garnish with fried coconut and coriander leaves.
  • Here is your hot and yummy Kerala style Chickpea Curry is ready to serve.
