Gujarati Bataka Vada – Potato Dumplings , Aloo Vada

Bataka Vada is an authentic Indian Gujarati Fast Food, a favorite snack of all Indians. Simple, quick and easy snack recipe, made with ingredients that are easily available at home.

You just need potatoes, salt sugar, turmeric and some additional spices. That’s it. Tastes awesome when served with Tamarind Chutney or Mint Chutney or Tomato Ketchup.

In India, you can find different cuisines. Each state has its specific taste. Batata vada is basically a Gujarati snack but has crossed all geographical and cultural barriers over time.

Light on the stomach and easy to digest. These potato dumplings are a great choice for and also for iftar.

Ingredients of Bataka Vada

  • Potato - 500 gm
  • Gram Flour - 200 gm
  • Green Chili Paste - 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 5 to 7 Pcs
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Lemon Juice - 3/4 tbsp
  • Salt - To Taste
  • Edible Oil - For Frying

Steps for Bataka Vada

  • Take a deep pot and fill it with water. Boil the potatoes. Remove the skin off. Mash the potatoes. Take a pan and heat 1 tablespoon oil in it. Add mustard seeds. When they start popping add curry leaves. Now add green chili paste, turmeric powder, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add mashed potatoes to it and mix it well. Add salt according to your taste and remove from the stove. Sprinkle freshly chopped coriander over it. Make round dumplings or balls with this mixture.
  • To make batter take a small bowl and add gram flour (besan) to it. Add salt if required to the besan. Slowly add water and make a thick batter. Add 1/2 teaspoon of yogurt to the batter. Adding yogurt will make the batter fluffy.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan. Dip the dumplings or vadas in the batter and fry on medium flame. Remove when the dumplings turn golden. Don't over fry them until brown. Will spoil the taste. Your scrumptious Bataka vadas are ready. Serve them with Tamarind Chutney or Mint Chutney for a classic taste.
